Austenesque Giveaways for 25 April-1 May 2011

The Austenesque scout is happy to let you know about two giveaways this week.

Laurel Ann Nattress of Austenprose is organising a contest for US readers to win a free DVD set of Upstairs Downstairs donated by BBC Video about the new revival of the 1970s hit series. The DVD is released today in US by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment after the conclusion of the third episode shown last Sunday on PBS's Masterpiece Classic. For a chance to win this DVD, leave a comment here mentioning your favourite characters from this new series or what intrigues you about this time period (pre-World War II). Deadline is next Wednesday, 4 May 2011. The winner will be randomly chosen and announced the next day.

Maria Grazia who manages My Jane Austen Book Club has interviewed William Deresievicz in her weekly column talking about Jane Austen with writers of Austen-inspired books. Professor Deresievicz has just released a new book this week called A Jane Austen Education: How Six Novels Taught Me about Love, Friendship and the Things that Really Matter. Read what he learnt through reading Jane Austen's works at this post. At the end of the interview, there is a giveaway for two copies of his books offered by his publisher, The Penguin Press. Rating: ★★★★★/★★★★★ After enduring a not very likeable Austenesque fiction in Karen V. Wasylowski's Darcy and Fitzwilliam which was reviewed several months ago, I was a little wary of reading any Austen-themed novels which caught my fancy because of its beautifully designed covers. After my colleague recommend me to try Maria Hamilton's debut novel, I made up my mind to read it next. It proved to be a wise choice for I spend many hours perusing this delightful Pride and Prejudice what-if story.
