This is a truly an amazing guide that acts as a companion to the fourth movie which is currently showing in theatres. Divided into smaller and compact chapters, the book begins with a forward by producer Jerry Bruckheimer explaining the reasons behind shooting another new instalment in the successful movie franchise. After a brief and concise introduction, there is a short description of the main characters accompanied by pictures of the movie and interesting tidbits and trivia.
The main players elaborated in this hardcover book are namely Captain Jack Sparrow, his ex-first mate Joshamee Gibbs (I never knew his first name as Jack always calls him Mr Gibbs in the movies), his nemesis Hector Barbossa, Jack's former lover Angelica and her father, the notorious pirate Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard) whom everyone fears. I like the illustrations included such as the pirate gear worn by each of them. Besides the characters, there are also chapters devoted to ships and the crews manning them such as Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge and his zombie crew, Captain Barbossa's H.M.S. Providence of the British Navy with experienced naval officers and the Santiago, a Spanish ship lost at sea two centuries ago but contains artifacts that are essential in the quest for the Fountain of Youth. There is also a comparison chart detailing the advantages and weaknesses of the two ships and which is likely to win the outcome of the battle between those two.
The most important element of the story is the Fountain of Youth and how it is use to gain immortality is beautifully described with facts and pictures. You have to read this book or watch the movie to gain a clearer understanding on this subject for it is difficult to explain in mere words. Suffice to say, I found it very interesting that they have to gather three items of mermaid's tears, two silver chalices from the Santiago ship and the Profane Ritual before Blackbeard can become immortal. It is also exciting to note that the map formerly belonging to the Asian pirate lord Sao Feng which was featured in the previous movie is known as Mao Kun map and is used to search for the Fountain of Youth. This shows the screenwriters paid serious attention in crafting a story that has a continuity thread to Jack Sparrow's seafaring adventures.
In conclusion, it definitely enhances my pirate knowledge before watching this film. Although this book is geared towards the children market, anyone who wishes to learn some facts from the movie can look to it for guidance.
