I always enjoy watching Johnny Deep play many eccentric characters in movies and among my favourite films featuring him is Pirates of the Caribbean series based on the Disney theme park rides. In anticipation of watching the fourth instalment in the cinema next Friday, I decided to take a peek at this movie storybook to know what I will be in for.
The book briefly explained the plot of the film with photo stills inserted beside the text to enhance the narrative. I think this is a good structure to entice readers to learn what the story has to offer and raise the excitement level among fans before watching it on the big screen. However it stop short of revealing the ending. In my opinion Disney do not want to spoil our enjoyment and thus it employ a good marketing strategy.
The story begins when Captain Jack Sparrow was brought on trial in London court to face justice for acts of piracy on British colonies in the Caribbeans. During the trial, it was revealed that the British actually caught his former first mate, Joshamee Gibbs and Captain Sparrow appeared to save Gibbs life by impersonating the presiding judge. Unfortunately, both ended up being captured and Jack was brought to King George II in St. James's Palace who wants him to guide an expedition to find the Fountain of Youth. Among the British, only Jack knows the exact location of the fabled Fountain of Youth from the map given by the pirate lord Sao Feng in the last movie. He will be joined by his arch-enemy, Hector Barbossa, a pirate turned privateer working for the British Navy, on the quest to find this priceless elixir of life before the Spanish do.
As usual, Jack managed to stage a daring escape from the palace and proceed to find the imposter that impersonates him and recruit crew members for his ship. It turns out to be his former love Angelica who tricks him into coming on board the Queen Anne's Revenge captained by the nefarious pirate Blackbeard who practices dark arts and is the father of Angelica. Blackbeard is looking for the Fountain of Youth to prolong his life after being informed by his zombie quartermaster that he will die at the hands of a one-legged man. Thus began their quest that includes capturing a mermaid for her tears while being pursued by Barbossa and the Spaniard.
Suitable for young children to glanced through, any fans of the movies are welcomed to peruse it as well. At 64 pages, this book can be completed in one sitting. Now I can't wait for next week to be able to watch one of the many summer blockbuster movies that will be shown this year.
